Melanie Relf RIBA
Melanie is a chartered architect with extensive experience of international capital projects in the healthcare sector over the last twelve years. Her focus during this time has been on the architectural design, clinical planning and execution of healthcare facilities.

A positive quote from Melanie, talking about her love of her work, the process, or how she works differently to others. Or something inspiring relating to MiRA or architecture.

At Stantec, Melanie was involved on the scheme to redevelop Qatar’s National Center for Cancer Care and Research (NCCCR), which included Proton Beam therapy and provision for linacs. She went on to take the lead on the development of the country’s healthcare design standards for Hamad Medical Corporation, in conjunction with Allies and Morrison and Buro Happold.
While at NBBJ, Melanie was part of the design team on the bid for Dumfries and Galloway Hospital, and on the design of The Forum, a multi-disciplinary joint venture between Laing O’Rourke, Cambridge University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Ramsay Healthcare.
At KEO, with whom she worked in Doha, Qatar, Melanie was appointed within the first line of management on the Sidra Medical and Research Center, a project funded directly by the Emir’s wife, Her Highness Sheikha Mosa Bint Nasser Al Thani, through Qatar Foundation. Melanie was responsible for undertaking strategic level reviews of design documents in all phases for healthcare design intent, use of materials and master plan objectives, with a strong awareness of cross-functional issues spanning departmental and operational aspects of the scheme. During her time at KEO Melanie also wrote the KEO Healthcare Review Guidelines Manual. Pelli Clarke Pelli’s 500-bed hospital covers 245,000 sq m, and is set to be a pioneering facility, marrying 7-star hospitality with state-of-the-art medical treatment. The project is due for completion shortly.
Melanie has been involved in a variety of sectors including residential, transport, educational, ecclesiastical and healthcare. After running her own practice for two years focusing on residential projects, Melanie joined BPR Architects Ltd in Putney as a Project Architect, where amongst other projects, she led the refurbishment of London Bridge Station for Connex, and the creation of a Student Union bar and associated accommodation for Middlesex University, both from Feasibility to End of Defects. She was also involved in the procurement of a Learning Resource Centre for Middlesex University up to planning. In 2002, Melanie joined Devereux Architects Ltd, again as a Project Architect, where her most recent project was the redevelopment of The Princess Alice Hospice in Esher, for The Princess Alice Hospice Trust, a registered charity, with a project value of £7m. She was also involved in Broomfield PFI, Putney Primary Care Centre and Rochford Mental Health Unit.
Melanie is a qualified Access Consultant, has participated in pilot schemes through the RIBA to reintroduce creativity into the National Curriculum, and gives careers presentations in schools. In 2008 she founded NAWIC Qatar, the National Association for Women in Construction chapter in the Middle East, and in 2010 was elected the Qatar Representative for the RIBA Gulf. Melanie held the post of UK National Chair of NAWIC on her return to the UK in 2014. She was heavily involved in the Qatar Green Building Council during her time in Qatar, and is also a member of Architects for Health.
